▶ CHARACTER
NAME: Shirou Emiya (衛宮 士郎)
CANON: Fate/Stay Night
CANON POINT: Post good end of UBW route
AGE: 17
BACKGROUND: Character BG, Route BG, and infromation about his most important ability
I'm taking him from the good end of the Unlimited Blade Works (UBW) route. I'm going based on the visual novel events versus the anime's version (there are some small differences here and there but nothing massive). There also will be minor references to the other routes such as the Fate route and the Heaven's Feel route (HF) throughout the application but the primary focus will be on the UBW route.
PERSONALITY:
Shirou is introduced as someone who is always willing to help around school and his part-time job and never complains about it. He's making Taiga's lunch and delivering it to her, he's fixing heaters at school, walking people back home, and doing archery club chores that aren't even his. He's always trying to find a way to be useful and helpful when he can. When others help him, he tries to find a way to repay them. This is seen with him helping with chores, his alliance with Tohsaka, and him even getting a part-time job even though Taiga's grandfather covered his expenses.
This also ties into him being a loyal ally and friend. Throughout all his routes, he remains loyal to those he befriends and allies with. He doesn't hold any grudge against those who previously attempted to kill him and then ally with him (see Illyasviel in the Fate route and Lancer in UBW route). Rin even attempts to harm him at school but quickly forgives her/lets it go to work together to help a fellow student at school. He even still thinks of Shinji as a friend in most routes even after Shinji insults, demeans, and is an overall asshole to him. Saber makes a comment saying show Shirou rarely speaks badly of people so she's surprised at the hostility between him and Archer. When it comes to those who hurt others, especially people he cares about, he's not at forgiving (Caster in UBW route and Gilgamesh in UBW and Fate routes). This also is a flaw in his ideology. He's the one who gets to decide who should and shouldn't be saved.
Overall, he's a pretty decent and humble guy. He's considerate of people's feelings even if he can makes quips occassionally. He's open to learning from his mistakes, improving himself, and works hard. Once he's made up his mind on something, he doesn't give up and works hard no matter how challenging it can be. On his own, he practiced his abilities without the guidance of his adoptive father. He also asks Saber to teach him how to fight so he can protect others and defend himself. He tries to find ways not to hurt/kill others if he can. He has a strong moral compass where he outright refuses to ally or work with those with no regard for human life and suffering. He genuinely wants to make the world a better place.
But wait, there's more!!
"Am I greedy to want an ending where everybody is safe and happy?"
Shirou's desire for becoming a hero of justice/superhero is a borrowed, some could say inherited, dream of his adoptive father (Kiritsugu). He wanted to be someone like Kiritsugu, someone who saves people. It's greatly impacted and shaped his personality throughout all the routes of the game. Being saved from the calamity of the Fuyuki's 4th Grail War by Kiritsugu further influences his concept of a hero of justice and saving others. This early childhood trauma and the feelings of survivor's guilt take his desire of being a hero of justice into darker territory.
What may sound like just an admirable goal of being someone who helps others has been distorted by his childhood trauma and survivor's guilt. Shirou's constantly helping others and putting others before himself. Yet, there's a darker side to that. He takes it to an extreme where there are moments in the game where he's extremely reckless and dangerous. In the Fate route, he's constantly putting himself in physical danger and on death's doorstep to protect Saber. He's told how dangerous and reckless that is (and even pointless or since her existence is tied to him being alive) but keeps doing it. In the UBW route, Shirou almost sacrifices himself to Caster to save Fujimura (which everyone around him thinks is an insanely bad idea). He states his main purpose for joining the Holy Grail War is due to wanting to save/protect people and prevent another calamity from occurring again even if that means his death. There's no hesitance or even a brief moment where he reflects the risk of himself dying.
He's willing to sacrifice himself to save others no matter the cost to himself. Yet, he doesn't treasure his own life, the one that Kiritsugu saved. Instead of treasuring the second chance at life he got from Kiritsugu, he's done things endangering or possibly sacrificing his life. He thinks his own life isn't as important as other people's lives. He's selfless when it comes to sacrificing or endangering his own life if it means protecting another person. He knows it's impossible to save everyone, but he believes at least trying does matter.
In the UBW route, Archer and Rin are the main ones to point out how his ideology of putting his life after others has flaws and is messed up. This ideology is further tested as he confronts a future version of himself who followed this idealistic mentality rigidly and suffered because of it. He knows his idealism has holes and it can be hypocritical. To Shirou, it's not about doing what is the "most" correct but what he feels is morally right. When talking to Tohsaka after they both lose their servants, she expresses regret and frustration while he talks about not regretting his choices as long as he did something helpful and made a difference.
By the end of UBW route, he hasn't given up his desire to help others. Yet he's able to accept while it's not possible to save everyone, he's going to keep being someone that tries to help and save others. He also starts to appreciate the things in his own life more and the relationships he has with both Saber and Rin in the UBW route. He starts to understand how his disregard for his own life affects those who care about him and love him. He never truly realized this before until Rin points it out to him in their route.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
His abilities range/change based on canon point and what route he's on. For the route and canon point I'm taking him from, he has these abilities:
Avalon: Avalon is Excalibur's scabbard and was planted within him to save his life as a child by Kiritsugu. It has the ability to heal and help keep Shirou alive. It's the strongest when Saber is contracted to Shirou. Yet it seems to still have some power without Saber present or him being contracted with Saber. Shirou doesn't die instantly or almost instantly even though Lancer directly pierced his heart with his noble phantasm (Rin does heal him and prevents his death, but Avalon kept him from dying right there and then).
*At Prismatica: Avalon will not heal Shiro here but it'll help keep him alive a tad bit longer.
Magecraft:
Shirou was never trained properly in magecraft or being a magus by Kiritsugu. He also never inherited Kiritsugu's crest. This means his abilities are limited, but that doesn't mean he's weak or can't do much of anything. He eventually did convince Kiritsugu to teach him some types of magecraft and he's kept on practicing. His abilities become even more powerful the more time he's seen and fights with Archer in the UBW route. Shirou doesn't consider himself a proper magus and it's not a goal of his. He mostly got into magecraft because of Kiritsugu and thinking how awesome it was.
Due to his lack of proper training, his body has been physically altered and affected by his lack of proper training and instruction. Instead of using his natural magic circuits in his body, he trained using his nerves. This caused him a lot of pain for what ended up being very dangerous training sessions. Eventually, he starts learning how to use his magic circuits but it's painful due to his previous improper training. Rin has given him guidance and lessons on how to improve his abilities.
Magecraft Abilities:
Reinforcement magecraft: Shirou's able to strengthen objects on a structural level by channeling his magical energy into the object. This is shown several times as he's used ordinary objects such as a rolled-up poster to deflect Lancer's attack and school desks to deflect Rin's magic attacks.
*At Prismatica: He'll still be able to do reinforcement magic. The only thing is that the effect will expire more quickly if he doesn't keep reinforcing it.
Projection/Tracing magecraft: Shirou's able to make replicas of weapons he's seen before. It's where his infamous "trace one" catchphrase comes from. Most of the time they're not as powerful as the originals, but they do a decent job. The more knowledge, history, and experience he has with the original weapon, he's more likely able to make a closer or exact replica that matches the strength and ability of the original weapon. He's better at replicating swords due to his elemental affinity but he's seen replicating a bow in the Fate route. He's not able to replicate certain weapons that usually have an extremely powerful magic theory/divinity to them (see: the Zelretch sword and Gilgames's Ea). He goes through seven steps in order to properly replicate a weapon. Shirou can mentally do all these seven steps very quickly. If he does spend more time on the steps, he can possibly replicate it more accurately.
*At Prismatica: He'll still be able to do projection/tracing magic. He'll be better at replicating swords more accurately than other weapon types. He'll be able to replicate non-magical weapons with no issue. If a non-sword weapon has a magical element, it won't be present in its copy. If a sword with a magic power is replicated, it'll be half as powerful and take more energy and time to replicate. For more powerful swords, he'll be able to replicate their looks, but they'll be hollow and lack their original ability/power.
Elemental Affinity: Shirou has a gift and natural talent with swords. He's drawn and fascinated by them. This is due to his origin (basically a short version is an influence or one's direction in life) are swords. It's unknown if Shirou was born with this or due to having Avalon within him for so many years, his origin became swords. Having sword as his origin, he ends up being a one-trick pony. He's not able to use magic relating to the five great elements well or that good at all. That's not exactly a bad thing in Shirou's case as he mostly just focuses on the magecraft he can do. His affinity and original with swords also tie into his Unlimited Blade Works ability and what comes with that.
*At Prismatica: This will remain unchanged. I'll specify more modifications under his Unlimited Blade Works and reality marble section.
Structural Grasp magecraft Shirou is able to map out an object and navigate its structure/build by creating a blueprint/layout of an object. He's seen using this when he repairs objects such as the heaters at school and fixing things around the house. This ability ties into his tracing/projecting ability as he uses this to help him replicate weapons.
*At Prismatica: He won't be able to map out objects that are only found on Prismatica. If they're similar to something he's familiar with, he can get a decent-ish mapping. If it's something he's familiar with, he'll have no problem mapping it. If he uses the object more, he'll get better at mapping it. If objects contain metals or materials he's never encountered, he won't be able to identify what they are but he'll know it's something he's not familiar with.
Rho Aias: Shirou was able to use one of Archer's signature abilities. It's a powerful shield that uses magical energy. It has multiple layers and flower-like petals. The number of petals and layers depends on the user's ability. Shirou uses it while in his reality marble against Gilgamesh. It's defensive in nature and the penality and energy consumption of using Rho Aias is extremely high.
*At Prismatica: He'll be able to form a tiny version that's much smaller and has far fewer layers. It'll only have four petals instead of all its petals.
Contradiction: It's not exactly Shirou's ability alone, but it's a form of magecraft that helped him pick up Archer's abilities and knowledge very quickly unconsciously. Since Archer is Shirou from the future, this creates a contradiction in time. Shirou's able to "absorb" and really take in Archer's skills. An example of this is Saber noticing how much Shirou has improved in fighting with a sword and that Shirou was copying Archer's style of fighting (something Saber believed took Archer years if not decades to perfect).
When Shirou realizes who Archer really is, Contradiction becomes even more powerful. It actually becomes too overwhelming as it's almost too much for Shirou to handle as he's picking up Archer's skills and abilities too quickly. It gets him to the point where he's able to fight Archer on more equal terms without a massive discrepancy of skill.
*At Prismatica: This won't be working here even if Archer is present.
Unlimited Blade Works: Unlimited Blade Works (UBW) is Shirou's reality marble but it's more than just that. Shirou's reality marble is a world of his creation that has an unlimited amount of swords. UBW is his signature and most powerful ability. It's extremely powerful but requires a lot of magical energy. UBW draws upon his other magecraft abilities (projection/tracing, reinforcement, sword affinity/origin, and structural grasp).
The ability is activated by reciting a poem. Once it is activated, the reality marble takes Shirou and his opponent(s) into a dimension created by Shirou. In this domain, Shirou's abilities are heightened and he becomes more powerful. The area is surrounded by an infinite amount of swords. In his reality marble, Shirou doesn't need to project and create replicated weapons. Instead, he just needs to summon them or take them.
Another aspect of UBW lies within his body. Instead of healing normally, UBW heals Shirou with tiny blades. In conjunction with Avalon, it makes Shirou be able to heal himself and more resistant to damage. This ability can overwhelm his body and kill him in some cases too. There are endings where this ability becomes too strong or overly activated and it kills Shirou directly and indirectly as the number of swords overtakes his body. Overuse of the healing aspect can possibly result in his bones and joints becoming metal-like and difficult to move. This aspect of his UBW ability is more apparent in the HF route, but it's still present within all the routes.
*At Prismatica: He'll only be able to sustain his reality marble for one minute and afterward he'll be extremely weakened and fatigued. He healing aspect will remain unchanged.
Normal Abilities:
Archery: He's a good shot with a Japanese bow and used to be one of the best, if not the best, in his school's archery club before he quit.
Swords: Minus the magecraft related abilities, Shirou's decent with using a sword and has greatly improved by the end of the UBW route. He's no Saber, but he can hold his own.
Cooking: He's a talented cook who started at a young age. He's most familiar with Japanese cuisine.
Mechanical: He's a recent handyman and becomes excellent when he uses his magecraft abilities. He's seen fixing electronics at school and around his place.
INVENTORY:
School uniform
Rin's pendant
Avalon (inside of him)
MOONBLESSING: Cordis! He'll be a snowy owl.
